Climate & Best Time to Visit Kyrgyzstan

Kyrgyzstan lies in the middle of Eurasia, far from any ocean and close to the great deserts, so its climate is continental and dry with sharply different seasons. Most of the country is in the temperate zone; only the south reaches into the subtropics. Thanks to the mountains and to Issyk-Kul — which never freezes — conditions change from continental to almost maritime over short distances. On average there are 247 sunny days a year.

Precipitation ranges from about 180 mm a year in the east to 1,000 mm in the south-west. Winters bring heavy snow in the mountains.

When to go

July and August — the best months for the mountains: high passes are open, herders are up on the summer pastures and the yurt camps at Song-Kol are full of life. Peak season for horse treks and trekking.
June and September — great for most routes with fewer people. Early June can still have snow on the highest passes; late September brings the first cold rain, and snow soon closes the passes.
April–May — the valleys, deserts and hillsides are in bloom: tulips, poppies and fresh green pastures. Ideal for Bishkek, the Silk Road cities and lower gorges.
October — golden autumn and harvest time, with markets full of fruit and vegetables. Good for valleys, canyons and the south.
November to April — ski season in the mountains around Bishkek and Karakol, winter horse rides and snowy landscapes.
